Welcome to MWC's Wrestler of the Week where every Friday we feature a wrestler from the past or present using a random generator and talk about their career and other information! This week's featured wrestler is The Original Assassin himself; Jody Hamilton! Real Name: Joseph "Jody" Hamilton Birthday: August 28,1938 From: St. Louis,Missouri,USA Height: 6'1'' Weight: 264 lbs Debut: 1955 Retired: 2005 Book: Assassin: The Man Behind the Mask Ring Names: The Assassin Assassin #1 Jody Hamilton The Flame Notable Titles: Continental Heavyweight Championship Mid-South Louisiana Championship (2x) NWA Central States Heavyweight Championship NWA Florida Television Championship NWA Florida World Tag-Team Championship (2x) NWA Georgia Southeastern Tag-Team Championship (5x) NWA Georgia Tag-Team Championship (16x) NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship (2x) AWA Southern Tag-Team Championship PCW Tag-Team Championship WWA Los Angeles Tag-Team Championship (2x) Promotions Wrestled: NWA WWWF AWA WCWA UWF CWA SCW Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Championship Wrestling from Florida Maple Leaf Wrestling Jody Hamilton was an amateur boxer before turning into pro wrestling. His brother: Larry Hamilton was also a pro wrestler and together they teamed up and had a semi-successful run as a tag-team. The Hamilton brothers wrestled for WWWF and there most notable match was a main event tag-team match in Madison Square Garden where they faced off Antonino Rocca & Miguel Perez. At this time Jody was only 19 years old making him the youngest person to main event at MSG! When Jody went out on his own to pursue a solo career he wrestled for NWA Western States and began wrestling as "Silent" Jody Hamilton. He was nicknamed "Silent" because he would rarely do interviews and promos because that isn't really what he does best. Anyways years later Hamilton wrestled for Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW) where he would wrestle for the most part of his career. In GCW is where The Assassin gimmick was born! Originally he was supposed to portray a Russian gimmick but last minute changes occurred and he was re-packaged with a masked wrestler gimmick, which I think was for the best. He would later team up with Tom Ronesto and together they were "The Assassins" and as JR said they were the greatest tag-team he ever saw! The Assassins dominated the tag-team division in Georgia winning multiple tag-team titles! They even set a record wherein they held the NWA Georgia Tag-Team Championships a total of 16 times! After leaving GCW, The Assassins wrestled for All-South Wrestling but the company was short lived. When Tom Ronesto retired, Randy Colley replaced his place as 1/2 of The Assassins. Colley would later wrestle for WWF as Moondog Rex. Although this reincarnation of The Assassins wasn't as successful as the first one. When Colley left to wrestle for WWF, Hamilton wrestled on his own for Championship Wrestling from Florida until later finding another tag-team partner which was Hercules Hernandez who was billed as "Assassin #3" in Bill Watts' Mid-South Wrestling. When Hernandez also left the company, Hamilton re-packaged himself as "The Flame." Under this gimmick he became a two-time NWA Southern Heavyweight Champion. In 1986 Hamilton ran his own wrestling promotion: Deep South Championship Wrestling. He also wrestled for a bit in said promotion until he got badly injured during a match which caused his long hiatus in the ring. Due to this injury he was forced to sell the company. When he retired for the first time, he worked for WCW as a trainer for their "Power Plant." When WCW was bought out by WWF he still continued to train young wrestlers. In 2005, Deep South Wrestling made it's return and this time it's a training ground for WWE at the time, it's very similar to what OVW and FCW was. WWE ended their deals with DSW in 2007 but they still held wrestling shows in the promotion for a bit before closing entirely in the same year. Also in 2005 The Assassin made his return in the ring after at least 17 years of in-ring hiatus. He competed for NWA Alabama wherein he teamed up with Dr. Tom Prichard to defeat Mike Jackson & Road Warrior Animal. His final match was in April 10,2005 where he was defeated by George South. The Assassin is now fully retired and in 2009 he sued WWE about the whole deal with Deep South Wrestling so we won't be seeing him in the WWE Hall of Fame anytime soon. Fun Fact: Referee Nick Patrick is the son of Jody Hamilton! |
