As 2018 comes to an end, we shall be greeted once again by the new year with New Japan Pro Wrestling's Wrestle Kingdom 13! At January 4th in the Tokyo Dome, a year's worth of storylines and matchups will culminate for what is expected to be the greatest wrestling event in all of Japan! For the unaware, Wrestle Kingdom is the biggest event in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) which is the No. 1 wrestling promotion in Japan right now. Traditionally, no matter the day, the event is held on January 4th which has been ongoing since 1992, main evented by Riki Choshu and Tatsumi Fujinami for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Then years later in 2007, the first ever Wrestle Kingdom took place with both NJPW and AJPW working together to usher in a new era for puroresu. Headlined by Keiji Mutoh and Masahiro Chono vs. TenCozy (Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima) the event was a success and ever since then, NJPW has permanently called their January 4th shows as such. This year however we have seen many things happen for New Japan, some good, some bad, and some might say ugly, it all depends upon the perspectives of who you ask. The longtime traditional fans have said it has been a slump for the company this year, but outsiders and generally newer fans enjoy the product. I, for one, just continue to take it all from every tournament to big show, even in the "house show" ones as I think there is no better wrestling company in the world right now than NJPW, especially technical wise. Every match for this year has a lot of stories to be told, some of these would officially come to an end, while for others, it is just barely the beginning. We will be highlighting and previewing every match on the card chronologically, and I'll be sharing to you my opinions in the process as well. It won't be easy like always, last year I did terrible on my predictions since you never know what curve ball the company will throw at you, if you think you're great at predicting wrestling events, put NJPW on a different pedestal. Anyways, enough with the talk and on with the walk, as without further ado, it is now time to take a closer look at next year's Wrestle Kingdom 13! NEVER Openweight 6 Man Tag-Team Championships: |
